Commercial Trees Investment & Sustainable Forestry Project

Sustainable forestry, or sustainable forest management, is the practice of managing forests to meet current needs and desires of society for forest resources, ie, products, services, and values, without compromising the availability of these for future generations.

SUMMARY

The project aims to restore the environment and improve the quality of life by investment on Commercial trees and sustainable forestry by planting 60,000 trees within Wakinga Location, Mfangano Island, Lake Victory, Homabay County – Kenya.

The project will involve identifying suitable location, selecting the appropriate space for conducting community awareness programs to promote the planting maintenance and commercial trees investment and sustainable forestry. This project will impact on the entire Mfangano Island population of 30,000, Rusinga Island, Islands in the neighborhood beaches and the wider Homa Bay County with a population of 1m plus.

Forests also provide fuel for cooking and warmth, medicinal plants, food, wildlife habitat, clean water, spiritual and cultural touchstones, and for many, the means to earn a living. Approximately 70 percent of terrestrial animals and plants make their homes in forests, while more than 25 percent of the world’s people—nearly 1.6 billion—rely on forest resources for their livelihoods, with 1.2 billion of them using trees to generate food and cash.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To improve air quality and reduce pollution.
  2. To promote income generating on activities in the forest
  3. To promote environmental conservation and awareness.
  4. To mitigate the effects of climate change.
  5. To increase given cover in targeted areas.
  6. To enhance the aesthetic value of the community.
  7. To support Kenyan Government’s agenda the 15 billion trees

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

1. Identify suitable areas for tree planting based on the ecological and community needs.

2. Conduct a survey to identify appropriate tree specifically for the selected areas.

3. Mobilize volunteers and community members to participate in the planting process.

4. Conduct training sessions to educate volunteers and community members on proper planting techniques and maintenance practices

5. Establish a monitoring and evaluation system to track the growth and health of the planted trees.

6.Conduct community awareness campaigns on the importance of tree planting and conservation.

7.Celebrate the success of the project through public efforts.

The project will require a budget of Ksh.60,000,000 Kenya shillings equivalent of Euros 400,000 to cover all the costs.

CONCLUSION

Sustainable forestry through tree planting for commercial investment aims to improve the quality of life, for profit and income generating and promotes environmental conservation by planting trees in the targeted areas.

The project will involve community participation, education and monitoring to ensure the long-driven success and sustainability of the initiative of Abhorea, Grevillea, Neem Trees are planted and nurtured.
